The new Consolidation Building is attached to the existing acute care hospital at VA Pittsburgh Healthcare System's University Drive (UD) campus. The new five-story building will house outpatient services and 78 secure, private psychiatric beds.

The design allows for ease of access to the education, multimedia, information and business center, as well as audiology and comprehensive inpatient and outpatient behavioral health. The building is seamlessly connected to the recently refurbished lobby of the exisiting medical facility opened in 1954.

New features of the Consolidation Building includes:

• A state-of-the-art education suite
• A multi-use conference room
• An updated library to serve both patients and hospital staff
• Integrated primary care and behavioral health clinics
• Distinct "day" and "night" areas with a nurses station in each, designed to help inpatients maintain routines of daily living
• Motion sensor lighting throughout the building
• An elevator designated to transport only staff and behavioral health patients
